A Home Away From Home

2: Tammy Denmark

To learn more about Maria, I looked into what her job entails and what she’d be surrounded by on a daily basis. I read about oceanographers and their study of the adaptation of aquatic organisms, and that word “adaptation” really stood out to me as it seemed to sum up Maria. This woman has been through so much—culturally, educationally, emotionally. I liked the idea of focusing on adaptation but I also wanted to incorporate the feeling of the ocean without being literal. In my research, I learned that jellyfish pre-date dinosaurs so they’re clearly a species that adapts. Featuring a jellyfish felt too literal to me, so I instead focused the design on their feminine, undulating movement.
