FTC codifies “Made in USA” guidance into rule

By Sara Yood, Esq.

If you make your jewelry in the U.S., you can label it as “Made in the USA,” right? Not likely, at least according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

On July 1, after multiple hearings and consideration by its commissioners, the FTC voted to adopt a final Made in USA Labeling Rule. Although the final rule is based on the previous longstanding Made in USA enforcement policy standard, this codified rule adopts a broader range of remedies that the FTC hopes will benefit small businesses and protect consumers from deceptive advertising.
