With a father who was a college art professor and a mother who worked as a freelance writer, it wasn’t a surprise that Marlene Richey wound up studying metals and English literature at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington. After graduating with a B.A. in art and jewelry, she married William Richey, with whom she would start the award-winning design firm William Richey Designs. Eventually they opened a gallery that became a showcase for up-and-coming jewelry designers. Over her 30-year career, Marlene has participated in hundreds of craft and jewelry shows, mastered marketing strategies and sales presentations, and earned a following among emerging artists for her generosity in passing along her hard-earned expertise. She’s taught workshops and classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Maine College of Art, and the North Bennet Street School in Boston, among others. She has also served on the board of directors of the Society of North American Goldsmiths.
