RubyCalling MJSA Expo New York a trade show is a bit like calling a beautiful ruby a rock. The words are accurate, but hardly sufficient.

Expo New York is, indeed, a trade show. Hundreds of exhibitors congregate there every year to sell nearly everything a jewelry maker could need short of a building. Thousands of qualified buyers walk the aisles to see, touch, and try out the tried and true and the innovative and new. They need hand tools, components, and gemstones, but also money-saving alloys and labor-saving laser welders. They want to see the latest, fastest CAD programs in action, but also to find good deals on insurance and security.

Hilton HotelThose interactions are Expo New York’s core service and the main reason Expo is the largest and oldest American trade show dedicated to the design and manufacture of jewelry. In 2010, MJSA Expo New York will move to the Hilton New York hotel at West 53rd Street and Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue) in Midtown. The Hilton provides convenient access, either onsite or nearby, to everything visitors from the jewelry industry may want or need, from restaurants, hotel rooms, and entertainment to a quick trip the Diamond District on 47th Street just blocks away. Radio City Music Hall, the Rockefeller Center, and the Museum of Modern Art are across the street, and Broadway, Lincoln Center, and Fifth Avenue shopping are within walking distance.

In addition to a great location, Expo has other significant benefits:

Expo salesMembers of this distinctive, challenging industry meet face to face at Expo to share ideas, opinions, and experiences--not to mention make business deals. Companies raise their profiles at Expo through sponsorships and other promotions. Attendees combine work with a visit to one of the most exciting cities in the world.

And for many attendees, Expo is a source of invaluable knowledge and expertise. Every year, MJSA assembles experts in a variety of fields to speak at seminars and provide hands-on technical training. In 2009 alone the lineup included designers Michael Bondanza and Maeve Gillies, industry analyst Ken Gassman, casting expert Linus Drogs, patterned metals expert James Binnion, and top executives Richard Powers of Cookson Precious Metals and David Meleski of the Richline Group.

CAD CAM DesignTopics are carefully chosen for their relevance and timeliness. In 2009, bankers and retailers delivered inside looks at what they require from borrowers and suppliers. Gassman pinpointed the next big jewelry consumers (Generation Y). Other speakers forecast the coming fashions, delved into the pitfalls of memo and the new lead law, and discussed the challenges of the recession, while instructors showed how to get the most out of a CAD system and work with palladium.

Yes, Expo is a trade show--like a ruby is a rock.
